30 вересня 2009 року в Національній парламентській бібліотеці відбулося урочисте відкриття програми “Бібліоміст”, метою якої є сприяння розвитку сучасної системи публічних бібліотек в Україні за допомогою створення в них центрів доступу до Інтернету. На відкритті було представлено декілька історій успіху (success stories), в яких було показано вплив Інтернету в бібліотеці на життя людей. Пропонуємо вашій увазі одну з таких історій, головними героями якої стали жителі села Синьків Заліщицького району Тернопільської області. Це відео про те, як Інтернет-центр, що був відкритий за програмою LEAP (Library Electronic Access Project) за сприяння Посольства США в Україні, змінив життя синьківців.

At a United Nations event marking the International Day of Democracy
(September 15), Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public

Affairs, Judith McHale, launched the Second Annual Democracy Video
Challenge.  Through this Challenge, the State Deartment and its partners
in youth and democracy organizations, academia, and the film/entertainment industry seek to enhance our global dialogue on democracy.

The Democracy Video Challenge asks filmmakers, democracy advocates, and the general public to create short videos that complete the
phrase, “Democracy is…”

  The deadline is January 31, 2010.

The winners will be selected by the online voting public.  Six regional
winners receive an all-expense paid trip to the United States.  Contestants who wish to compete anonymously may also submit videos.  One anonymous video will be selected as a winner; however, that contestant will not be eligible to claim the travel prize.

More than 900 video submissions from 95 countries were submitted in the
first Democracy Video Challenge.  Be sure to spread the word among your AC patrons and visitors about the Second Challenge.  To learn more, please

The World Library and Information Congress 2009, 75th IFLA General Conference and Assembly, is August 23-27 in Milan, Italy.  Librarians from the  Department of State’s International Information Programs will host a booth at IFLA to promote US Embassy Library Programs, including IRCs, American Corners, and Binational Centers. 

One of the booth’s activities  is a speaker series featuring prominent American librarians discussing such topics as Library 2.0, Sister Libraries, International Digital Library Projects, and Youth Services and Outreach.   These presentations will be done in person and virtually via video web chats.

Dr. Michael Stephens is Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University in Illinois after spending 15 years working in public libraries. His recent publications include two ALA Library Technology Reports on Web 2.0, the monthly column “The Transparent Library” with Michael Casey in Library Journal, and other articles about emerging trends and technology. Michael also maintains the popular blog Tame the Web. Michael speaks internationally on libraries, technology, and innovation.

Josie Parker – Director of the Ann Arbor District Library, and one of the co-founders of the Internet Public Library

Topic: Innovative public library programs

Josie Parker earned her Master’s in Information and Library Studies is from the UM School of Information. She has served as Director at Ann Arbor District Library for the past seven years.  She has served on the boards of the Michigan Library Consortium and the Michigan Library Association and is an active member of national library associations and a former Board member of the Public Library Association, a subgroup of the American Library Association.

Meaghan O’Connor oversees library and advocacy issues on the Global Libraries Romania and Ukraine projects currently being implemented by IREX. O’Connor was part of the 2008 ALA Emerging Leaders cohort, and served as the Fellow for Dean’s Initiatives while pursuing her MLS, furthering Simmons’ international initiatives in Korea and the Middle East. Since 2007, O’Connor has been working with the Sister Libraries Subcommittee of ALA’s IRRT to raise awareness of the benefits of sister library partnerships.

Erich Kesse – Digitization and Preservation Consultant,  past-Director of the Digital Library Center at the University of Florida

Topic: International and collaborative digital library projects

Erich Kesse is currently a consultant who works with archives, libraries and museums on the preservation and digitization of collections.  His clients have been located in Florida, the Caribbean (including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Haiti, and Guyana), and Botswana.  He also is the former Director at the Digital Library Center at the University of Florida, where he was responsible for creation and implementation of digitization programs.

María Gentle  - Arlington Public Library  

Topic: Youth services / teen services & outreach

María E. Gentle received her MLS from the University of Texas at Austin.  She has worked as a children’s and university librarian for many years in Texas and currently has been a Youth Services Librarian since 1992 at Arlington Public Library in Arlington, Virginia.  She is very active in the ALA (American Library Association) having participated as member of the YALSA (Young Adults Library Services Association) Board of Directors and also in many book award committees such as the Printz Award, MAEdwards Award, and currently the Newbery Award committee.  She does presentations on teen library services in the United States and abroad.

Karen Coombs  - Library Journal 2009 Mover and Shaker, author of LibraryWebChic blog, Head of University of Houston’s Web Services Department          

Topic:  Making the most of your library’s internet/web presence

Karen A. Coombs serves as the Head of Web Services at the University of Houston Libraries. Her duties include development and maintenance of the libraries’ web site and virtual presence for 35,000 plus students, faculty and staff. She has an MLS and an MS in Information Management from Syracuse University. Karen has presented at many national and international conferences including ALA Annual, Internet Librarian, Access and ELAG; she has written articles for Computers in Libraries, Library Journal, Library Hi Tech, and Journal of Academic Librarianship. With Jason Griffey , she is the co-author of the book Library Blogging. In 2009, Karen was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker. She is past-chair of the LITA Special Interest Group for Blogs, Wikis and interactive media, a member of the LITA Top Technology Trends panel, and the author of the Library Web Chic weblog.

Second Call for Papers

The conference is organized to honor Edgar Allan Poe, one of the leading figures in American literary history, on the 200th anniversary of his birth (1809 – 2009). We invite you all to bring your contribution and highlight aspects regarding E.A. Poe’s life and activity as a poet, short-story writer, editor, essayist, and literary critic. Papers are invited in the following sections:

A. American Literature

Works are welcomed to circumscribe E.A Poe as an American literary icon and focus on his poetry, his tales of mystery and the macabre, his satires, humor tales, and hoaxes. Poe is considered the father of the detective story and one of the founders of the science fiction literature. You are also invited to approach Poe’s numerous articles, stories and reviews that earned him the reputation of a literary critic, as well as his scientific pieces that place him far ahead of his times.

B. Comparative Literature

Considering the influences of Gothic literature and Dark Romanticism, papers may approach E.A. Poe’s works in the broader context of universal literature and focus on similarities, common techniques and recurrent literary themes that link the American icon to other writers. You are also welcomed to discuss on precursors, affiliations, followers, and Poe’s influence on the course of universal literature.

C. Cultural Studies

E. A. Poe has remained a controversial source of inspiration for popular culture as reflected in literature, music, films, and television. The writer’s lifestyle may seem odd to the contemporary public. His points of view on mesmerism, catalepsy, cosmology and cryptography on the one hand, and his attitudes on marriage, drugs and alcohol on the other, may be approached in a new light for the eyes of the 21st century reader.

D. Translation Studies

Participants are welcomed to comment on the translations of Poe’s works into Romanian or other languages. Translators may share their experience, comment on possible difficulties that may be encountered when translating the literary heritage of this exquisite master of words.

Further information

A. The organizing committee has decided to extend the deadline until June 15th, 2009.

B. International participants may join our event via a videoconference facilitated by the American Corners all over the world. Please set up a proper time interval with the local American Corner office and send it to us at your earliest convenience, but not later than June, 15th 2009, so that we can arrange schedule details.

C. A selected number of papers will be published in the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Review issued by the Poe Studies Association in the USA. There will be a special number dedicated to our conference proceedings. A further selection of papers will be gathered in a volume which will be published at a nationally recognized publishing house. The costs will be announced once the scientific board will have made a decision on the paper classification.

D. The conference registration fee is 30 € and it covers participation costs, coffee breaks, lunches and conference portfolio.

E. All participants will have 15 minutes for paper presentation and 10 minutes for discussions.
