Second Call for Papers

The conference is organized to honor Edgar Allan Poe, one of the leading figures in American literary history, on the 200th anniversary of his birth (1809 – 2009). We invite you all to bring your contribution and highlight aspects regarding E.A. Poe’s life and activity as a poet, short-story writer, editor, essayist, and literary critic. Papers are invited in the following sections:

A. American Literature

Works are welcomed to circumscribe E.A Poe as an American literary icon and focus on his poetry, his tales of mystery and the macabre, his satires, humor tales, and hoaxes. Poe is considered the father of the detective story and one of the founders of the science fiction literature. You are also invited to approach Poe’s numerous articles, stories and reviews that earned him the reputation of a literary critic, as well as his scientific pieces that place him far ahead of his times.

B. Comparative Literature

Considering the influences of Gothic literature and Dark Romanticism, papers may approach E.A. Poe’s works in the broader context of universal literature and focus on similarities, common techniques and recurrent literary themes that link the American icon to other writers. You are also welcomed to discuss on precursors, affiliations, followers, and Poe’s influence on the course of universal literature.

C. Cultural Studies

E. A. Poe has remained a controversial source of inspiration for popular culture as reflected in literature, music, films, and television. The writer’s lifestyle may seem odd to the contemporary public. His points of view on mesmerism, catalepsy, cosmology and cryptography on the one hand, and his attitudes on marriage, drugs and alcohol on the other, may be approached in a new light for the eyes of the 21st century reader.

D. Translation Studies

Participants are welcomed to comment on the translations of Poe’s works into Romanian or other languages. Translators may share their experience, comment on possible difficulties that may be encountered when translating the literary heritage of this exquisite master of words.

Further information

A. The organizing committee has decided to extend the deadline until June 15th, 2009.

B. International participants may join our event via a videoconference facilitated by the American Corners all over the world. Please set up a proper time interval with the local American Corner office and send it to us at your earliest convenience, but not later than June, 15th 2009, so that we can arrange schedule details.

C. A selected number of papers will be published in the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Review issued by the Poe Studies Association in the USA. There will be a special number dedicated to our conference proceedings. A further selection of papers will be gathered in a volume which will be published at a nationally recognized publishing house. The costs will be announced once the scientific board will have made a decision on the paper classification.

D. The conference registration fee is 30 € and it covers participation costs, coffee breaks, lunches and conference portfolio.

E. All participants will have 15 minutes for paper presentation and 10 minutes for discussions.
