Library of Congress List, Books That Shaped America

The U.S. Library of Congress is beginning a multiyear “Celebration of the Book” that features an exhibition on “Books That Shaped America.”  The list of books in this exhibit is below, and more details about the books and the celebration are online at —  http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/books-that-shaped-america/

The Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, describes the booklist as “a starting point.”  He says, “It is not a register of the ‘best’ American books – although many of them fit that description. Rather, the list is intended to spark a national conversation on books written by Americans that have influenced our lives, whether they appear on this initial list or not.”
