Тиждень забороненої книги в США: свято свободи читання

Американська бібліотечна асоціація (ALA) виступає за свободу вибору та свободу висловлювати свою думку, навіть якщо ця думка вважається не загальноприйнятою або є непопулярною. ALA підкреслює, що важливо забезпечити наявність і доступність різних точок зору для всіх, хто хоче про них читати.

Часто з боку окремих осіб чи груп оскаржується включення певних книжок до фондів бібліотек чи до кола читання в школах, робляться спроби вилучити їх з бібліотек, чи обмежити доступ до них. Проблема при цьому полягає не в тому, що окрема людина, або група людей висловлює певну точку зору, ні, вони роблять спробу вилучити матеріали зі шкільної програми або з бібліотеки, тим самим обмежуючи доступ до інформації інших. Такі дії представляють загрозу для свободи слова і свободи вибору.

Офіс ALA з інтелектуальної свободи сприяє усвідомленню цієї проблеми і святкує свободу слова під час «Тижня заборонених книг» http://www.ala.org/bbooks/. Ця подія відбувається в останній тиждень вересня кожного року. Тиждень заборонених книг 2013 р. відбуватиметься 22 – 28 вересня.

Офіс ALA з інтелектуальної свободи укладає списки оспорюваних книг; ці дані збираються з повідомлень у засобах масової інформації та з повідомлень від бібліотекарів і вчителів з усієї країни. Declaration for the Right to Libraries

A Message from 2013-2014 American Library Association President Elect Barbara Stripling:

“My presidential initiative, entitled Libraries Change Lives, will focus on increasing public understanding of the value of libraries, especially in the realms of literacy, innovation, and community engagement. Now is the time for us to build the public will for libraries of all types.

As part of this effort, we have planned a campaign called America’s Right to Libraries and developed a Declaration for the Right to Libraries to serve as a strong public statement of the value of libraries for individuals, communities, and our nation. Through this initiative, libraries of all types will have the opportunity in the next year to hold signing ceremonies where community members, organizations, and officials can visibly sign and stand up for their right to have vibrant school, public, academic, and special libraries in their community.”

Connect with your kids @ your library: the ALA campaign

Читачі бібліотек хочуть користуватися і книжками і технологіями

Pew Research Center оприлюднив звіт “Бібліотечні послуги в електронну еру”, в якому показано, що безкоштовний доступ до технологій у публічних бібліотеках для користувачів старше 16 років так само важливий, як і читання книжок і консультації бібліотекарів. 80% з 2252 опитаних сказали, що дуже важливою бібліотечною послугою є абонемент та довідково-бібліографічне обслуговування, і 77% опитаних таку високу оцінку дали вільному доступу до комп’ютерів та Інтернету.
